Making History in
our Everyday Lives
|
|
|
|
"It is hard to think
of ourselves as making history in our everyday lives . . . but we do.
Future ages will look back on us and know important things about us through our
quilts, and so what our quilts bear witness to matters. As quiltmakers
ourselves, we know something of the character it takes to envision a whole - and
the diligence needed to stitch that vision on to its finish as a quilt. We
also know something of hand appliqué's effect upon the stitcher herself.
Appliquérs speak of their stitching with something akin to reverence. So,
of course, recent scientific data pleased us as it affirmed that stitching
reduces stress and flowers bloom pressure. Appliqué focuses the mind and
salves the soul. The longer one stays on that journey - going into herself
for inspiration and out again to list to what the design wants to become; the
longer she stitches, the more something new evolves within her. This
care of the soul through stitching is no new idea. Listen to advice
stitched on an antique sampler:

"While
you, my dear, your needlework attend
Observe the counsel of a faithful friend
And strive an inward ornament to gain
Or all your needlework shall prove in vain."
