I've been interested in quilts since I first slept under them as a child in my great aunt’s home in Pennsylvania but did not begin making them until I retired from the United States Navy Nurse Corps in 1992. My first post-retirement “mission” was to sign up to take a Sampler class and I’ve been quilting ever since. I began teaching appliqué and other hand quilting techniques in 2002 and am currently teaching my fourth year long Baltimore Album Program. I was thrilled to be the group leader for the “Affection’s Tribute” quilt included in Elly’s "Beloved Baltimore Album Quilts" and displayed in Houston in 2010. I live in Bowie, Maryland with my husband and two “puppies” who see to think every quilt I make is for them!

First Kisses!  Kathy had the amazing good fortune to watch a seal being born while teaching at Asilomar this year.  It's one of those, "Oh. God I remember what that felt like" pictures.

About Joanne -

I have been teaching appliqué for more than a decade and doing appliqué since 1976. I take a low stress approach and love helping students to approach complicated appliqué from the standpoint of making it approachable and yielding a successful result. I try to come up with several different ways of doing things to give people choices on how to approach challenges. This class will be fun and hopefully people will take from it techniques that will be useful in whatever appliqué they choose to do in the future. Oh, and I believe in the Zen of Appliqué: be at one with your block. If you are fighting it, something is wrong.)

Kathy started quilting in 1994 and within four years was teaching quilting classes.  She began with a small group of ladies in her church group and then started offering workshops at a local quilt shop. She now lectures and teaches all over Canada at guilds, shops and quilt shows and is a Certified Quilt Judge by the Canadian Quilters’ Association.

Kathy began showing her work in 2002 and has received recognition in Canada as well as internationally, including the 2011 Bernina Machine Workmanship Award at the American Quilter’s Society Show in Paducah Kentucky.  Her work has been published in magazines, including Quiltmaker’s 100 Blocks Special Issue, and in her first book with C&T Publishing, called “Sewflakes: Papercut Appliqué Quilts”. Kathy specializes in appliqué techniques in a “contemporary traditional” style.  She has explored her fascination with papercut appliqué and its possibilities for incorporating hidden images.  Now she is intrigued with ironwork and is finding new inspiration there for intricate appliqué designs.

As Kathy has developed as an artist, her work has taken on a distinct focus.  Using Biblical imagery and spiritual themes, Kathy's quilts are a reflection of her relationship with God and her journey of faith.
