Teaches You Beginning Baltimore Appliqué©
DVD
This second DVD is also filmed in the
gracious Williamsburg Hospitality House Inn,
Elly's Appliqué Academy site, and this DVD
teaches you:
Pattern Transfer: You'll explore pattern
transfer and learn a technique Elly
developed called "Pattern-Bridging".
The Pattern: Elly teaches an exquisite sprig
of roses block whose pattern, "The Star
Ruched Rose", is included on the DVD
Appliqué Methods: This block reviews Cutaway
Appliqué by Needleturn — teaching its unique
methods for Points, Curves, and Inside
Corners. Next, Separate Unit Needleturn
Appliqué is taught on the tiny leaves.
Ruching: Ruching as many of you know is
patterned gathering. You'll learn the most
common kind of ruching, "Shell Ruching",
plus rectangular "Rake Ruching", a curved
"Crescent Moon" ruching pattern, and
variations of these patterns. You'll ruche
our lesson block's flowers in a "Star
Ruching Pattern".
Embellishment in Thread: You'll learn how to
embroider the finest stems, flower stamens,
moss on the moss rose, and serrations on the
rose leaves.
Embellishment in Ink: You'll learn how to
iron-on a photocopy of a Victorian
hummingbird engraving, then etch it in
finest permanent pen. You'll learn how to
pen in the finest botanical details, adding
a finer depth to the embroidered
embellishment. The hummingbird transfer is
included so that you can print it out.
Copperplate Calligraphy: You'll learn how to
change the writing you were taught into the
artful Copperplate Calligraphy of the
antique Albums. Learn Elly's secret for a
rough draft in place — and thickening the
downstroke to imitate the effect of the old
elbow pens. The Copperplate alphabet is
included in the DVD.
Sets and Borders: Elly Teaches Advanced
Baltimore Appliqué concludes with this
rarely covered subject. You'll learn so much
about designing the "Set" of your blocks so
quickly with beautiful quilt examples!
This second DVD is good entertainment - with
an informative interview section. Elly’s
excellent instruction got her voted
"Favorite Appliqué Teacher" (2009) by
readers of Quilter's Newsletter. Let her
teach you in the most comfortable of
settings — your home! |

tutoring - then take the best seat in the
house!
Curious about February's annual Appliqué
Academy®? Meet its Williamsburg Hospitality
House Inn site — and one of its 10 caring
Academy teachers!
Too expensive to travel to an Elly class?
Bring her to your house! Let her teach you
the basics clearly and systematically... and
provide the patterns!
Would enjoy a relaxed chat with Elly? The
smile-filled DVD "interview" is a visit -

Mr. S!

close-up stitching view may well be even
better than Elly's! And you can take this
class repeatedly!
Enjoy Elly's warm supportive company for
almost 2 hours as she teaches needleturn
appliqués' basics (smooth curves, perfect
points, clean inside corners)
Filmed in the gracious Williamsburg
Hospitality House Inn, Elly's Appliqué
Academy site, this DVD also teaches you:
How to sew (and design!) the easiest
appliqué pattern: a one-layer pattern
sometimes called a "papercut". Learn how to
design and make your own by the same method
you used to fold and cut snowflakes as a
child. 3 papercut patterns (beginner,
intermediate, advanced) are included.
How to make an oil pastel portrait (from a
snapshot) on your background cloth so you
can appliqué it into the lesson's quilt
block frame.
How to size a photograph (instructions on
the Printed Treasures package) printed onto
fabric to be held by your lesson's quilt
block frame.
How to speed-appliqué the very easiest of
classic appliquéd quilt borders.
One of Elly's own, rarely seen Album Quilts,
"Alex's Album - Classic Revival" concludes
the teaching portion of the DVD. You'll
delight in the intricacies of its papercut
blocks - which you now know how to design
and to sew.
After you've watched the lesson, seen a
couple of shots of Elly's Appliqué Academy,
gotten a sense of what fun it must be to
take classes and reside (open classrooms at
night and all sorts of girlish delights …
the perfect counterpart to excellent
teaching!) in the charming Inn; you'll "walk
around" historic Williamsburg, Virginia.
This DVD is entertaining as well as
instructive, with its beautiful photography
set to a bit of music. (You'll find this DVD
a thoroughly "giftable" package to send to a
quilting friend.)
Though Elly loves to write (C&T, her
publisher for so many books, is about to
publish her 21st book), this DVD "picture"
is truly worth 1,000 words! It may be a
short-run "in print" … so get yours now. |

Appliqué Paper Greetings
|
|
Appliqué
Paper Greetings teaches all about card
making: What cards are, what they do,
design, and editorial approaches that make
cards successful. Appliqué Paper Greetings
is a workbook with sequential lessons and
patterns. The lessons begin with the
simplest of cards, the cut-out design motif
itself, then move on to postcards and folded
cards, dimensional ones, pop-up cards, those
that contain small treasures, and greetings
that are functional gifts in themselves.
Ribbon flowers and other embellishments are
covered, as are TechnoFancies, cards
decorated by the sewing machine. "Cloth and
paper" - the stuff of this book's projects -
are each bursting with possibilities. Beyond
cloth and paper, beyond the artwork and
editorial processes, hovers the most
important ingredient of all. . . creativity.
It can be encouraged, and even learned. Why
not work your way through the eight lessons?
You may discover magic in these cards - and
in yourself. |

Baltimore Beauties and Beyond,
Volume I
Studies in
Classic Album Quilt Appliqué
|
|
Unquestionably the most comprehensive book
on how to do hand appliqué in print today.
This book is clearly and copiously
illustrated, and sparkles with 16 pages of
color. Elly's patterns for making 29 blocks
lead from beginner simplicity to complex
classic appliqué. Basic details of perfect
points, corners, curves, and invisible
stitches lead the reader through Victorian
fancywork like ruching, then right up to the
modern ease of appliqué with the "freezer
paper on top" method. This book will surely
become a needlework classic. |

Beyond, Studies in Classic Album Quilt

|
OUT OF PRINT |
|
An intimate portrait, Baltimore Album
Quilts, draws the historic period, the
quilts, and their makers closer to us all.
The lively text stages both quilts and
design motifs in a dramatic historic era.
Fifty-two spectacular color plates, most of

this nineteenth-century quilt tradition. In
clear close-up photography, they reveal
antique fabric use, period embroidery, and
subtleties of individual presentations. With
integrity and artistry, a splendid fifty-six
patterns for making fifty-eight "beyond
Baltimore" blocks are presented. Each one is
referenced to appliqué lessons in Volume I,
for whom this is a companion pattern book.
Ten exciting classes using this book as text
are outlined and may be taught in workshops
or taken independently. Whether for a great
read, or as a scholarly reference, or to
create an Album heirloom of your own, this
volume, itself, is certain to become a
treasured possession. |

Spoken Without A Word
A Lexicon of Selected Symbols with 24
Patterns
From Classic Baltimore Album Quilts |
|
OUT OF PRINT |
A wee Lexicon of selected symbols, and their
meanings, from the Baltimore Album Quilt
Period. It is illustrated with 23 drawings
carefully replicating original Baltimore
Album Quilt blocks and one contemporary
block. The introduction develops the thesis
that these Baltimore Album Quilts used
symbolism extensively and often
intentionally: that, in fact, these quilts
"spoke without words."
