Beautiful botanicals were a common theme in
the old Baltimores and whether contained in
wreaths, baskets or vases they were
faithfully recreated with attention to
detail.
Create your own “floral elegance”
with this contemporary block depicting a
stately urn holding fast to her dignity
while the riotous burst of blooms and color
above fills her senses.
Together, you will tackle Evelyn’s
original design with complex elements in
ways that will make it seem like child’s
play.
Instruction will be given in the following
techniques:
prepared appliqué using freezer paper
templates, off-block construction of
prepared edge appliqué, fabric selection to
enhance your work and make the block your
own, working with silk for appliqué, and
embellishment techniques including
embroidered details, silk ribbon embroidery,
and beading.
You will focus on preparing and
stitching down the vase, preparing at least
one of each type of flower in the block, and
practicing the embroidery stitches required
for the vase motif, morning glories, asters,
sunflower center, and calla lily center.
All this, plus a warm and welcoming
teacher anxious to help you succeed. |
|
Lab Fee: |
$12.00 includes freezer paper templates,
additional freezer paper, transparency
overlay, silk fabric for practice, floss and
ribbon for practicing embellishment
techniques, lace pieces for vase. |

Oh my! So much fruit, such delightful
visions of abundance! And a bird who has
found his Eden. Venture beyond your “color
box” —color this block vibrant as you
incorporate rich fabrics and fine threads.
Mid-last century, Achsah Wilkin's centered
her fancy imported chintz coverlet with this
medallion. Leaving scrap quilts behind,
Achsah indulged in lush cloth, stately layed-out.
She may well have influenced the more
refined, elegant Baltimore Album style.
Delight in achieving this look with Kathy’s
“sleight of hand” ribbon and floss work.
Love her quick and clever shallow
basket-weaving (featured in
Elly
Sienkiewicz's Beloved Baltimore Album Quilts).
Ultrasuede grapes and berries blend
into the basket’s bright silk and cotton
fruit.
Learn what each fruit symbolizes –
pick yours intentionally! Fancy trims and
beads (this is a kit not to miss!) can
complete the basket while your embroiderer’s
needle sings over the rich contents. Delight
in Kathy’s class, thrill to her ingenious
techniques … skinny stems, no mark
background, and informed facility with
silks, velvets, ribbons, and beads. Yes, if
you care to, you can even reconstruct
Achsah’s original block in chintz. Come
share Kathy’s love of appliqué with your
own. |

“If the British march by land or sea from the

These famous words were penned by
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow after Paul
Revere’s renowned ride and became the

Depicting Paul Revere sitting astride
his steed in the front of The Old North
Church this brave patriot is ready to hang

British are coming!
Lanterns gleam in the upper corners
and a spray of roses and buds highlight this
dramatic scene.
Join Pearl as she guides you through
careful prep work for perfect appliqué
results; and let her introduce you to the
uniquely successful techniques she has
developed.
Learn her “Off the Block” prepared
edge freezer paper appliqué techniques and

Inspired
and Enduring Broderie Perse!
With
Judy Severson |
|
FULL |
We are sorry, but this class is
currently full! |
|
|
Love floral fabrics and beautiful printed
images — but mystified as to how to use
them?
Judy has discovered that the repeats
used in
all
fabric prints are virtually begging you
to let them help you create your own
broderie perse quilt ! An
enduring classic style, early chintz quilts
were fashioned from beautifully printed
fabrics of flowers, garlands, birds, people
and more. Never out of style, motifs were
creatively cut out and stitched down to
build elegant designs. Later years found the
term chintz quilt changed to
broderie perse.
This artistic style can be found
filling whole Baltimore album blocks or
sprinkled amongst baskets and wreaths
bringing the quilt realism and touches of
the unique.
You choose: (1) to be inspired
by a quilt:
bring a picture of an antique quilt
or block and use some part of it as a guide
to create an original; (2)
adapt
a quilt block pattern (whether Baltimore
genre or modern design) into broderie perse;
or (3) enter on an
adventure of quilt design free of
preconceptions.
Judy’s personal one-on-one teaching
allows each student’s creatively to soar;
and no matter what your comfort level she
will be there to encourage, guide, and
inspire.
Elly notes, “I am in awe of Judy, year after year teaching new designs –
often each student’s individual journey –
each with always a knock-out started top by
Sunday! I was stunned when Judy showed me
“the quilt in the cloth” secret (garlands,
bouquets, swags), and am in awe of how
quickly all her students “get it” and end up
each with their own quilt blocks, and even
full tops, pinned out by class end. (See
Judy’s Medallion Quilts in her
Flowers in Appliqué
— Quilt Digest
Press.)
What a gift Judy is! So steeped is she
in the art of Broderie Perse, that Judy year
after year unveils ever fresh Broderie Perse
designs with class teaching concepts. They
seem to beat with the pulse of the era. I
wonder to think that she can present
concepts pictorially and make us empathize
immediately, as though soul-salved by her
insight and artistry. |

Iconic Liberty Bell with Eagle!
With
Rita Verroca |
|
FULL |
We are sorry, but this class is

|
|
Although the Old
State House Bell, famously named
Liberty Bell
after a poem in 1839, hasn't rung since
George Washington's birthday on February 22,
1846, we still can hear the sound of freedom
echoing over our vast country.
Built in 1753 the Liberty Bell is the
iconic symbol of American Independence.
Cast with the lettering,
Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land and
unto all the inhabitants thereof,
it
will stand proud among our Baltimore blocks.
Rita drafted and stitched this
original design just for the Academy.
Details include 13 stars for the 13
original states adorning 2 versions of our
National Flag, and a proud eagle holds a
freedom cap. Let Rita discuss the history of
our flag, star shapes, Betsy Ross, George
Washington and, of course, the beautiful
bell. Make
this patriotic image with the help of ombres
and printed fabrics.
Tiny stitches, smooth curves,
fray-less V's and U's will be a breeze after
you take this class. You’ll find Rita a
fascinating person, much loved, and an
expert teacher. Come perfect your appliqué
with precise tutelage in tiny stitches, tiny
leaves, skinny stems, sumptuous curves,
straight architectural lines. Learn how to
further enhance your appliqué with inking
and embroidery so by the time you are done
with your block you will surely hear the
joyful peals of liberty’s song throughout

The cornucopia or horn
of plenty is steeped in symbolism and is
found in mythology, folk lore and religions
around the world.
Whether filled to overflowing with
fruit, flowers, grain or nuts, it signifies
prosperity and abundance.
In 1945 on the 100th year anniversary
of the Republic of Texas being admitted to
the Union, Abby Aldridge Rockefeller sent a
Baltimore Album Quilt to the Museum of Fine
Arts Houston.
She wanted the Houston Museum to have
this particular quilt because of the
historical connection between Baltimore and
Texas.
Baltimore heroes had given their
lives alongside Texas soldiers in the battle
with Mexico over freedom and the quilt
honored them by including one block
featuring a Lone Star with an oak and acorn
wreath representing the Live Oak Tree that
is indigenous to Texas.
The Baltimore quilters used symbols
to demonstrate the close connection in
political and religious beliefs with their
Texas neighbors and Georgann has interpreted
this antique block beautifully.
It features oak leaves, plump acorns,
luscious fruit, wildflowers and, most
importantly, the cornucopia itself, a symbol
of bounty and friendship.
This block could be included in a
Baltimore quilt that you have already
started or may be used as a single block
Thanksgiving Fruit and Freedom wall-hanging.
Techniques to learn or improve upon will
include back basting or Perfect Pattern
Placement; Pattern-transfer methods; reverse
appliqué; invisible stitches; off-unit
construction;
perfect circles; and sharp points,
smooth valleys and curves.
It seemed serendipitous for Georgann, a true Texas girl, to present a
block from this generously gifted, antique
quilt for you.
With Georgann’s guidance, interpret,
study, and reflect upon the historical
connections of our developing nation. |
